How to Turn a WhatsApp Chat Into a PDF: Export, Style and Print Your Chat Book

Some chats deserve to outlive the phone they live on: a first year of dating, a family group thread, the messages from a trip nobody wants to lose. Screenshots capture a screen at a time; a chat book captures the whole conversation, in order, with dates and names intact. Our free WhatsApp chat to PDF tool turns a WhatsApp chat export into a beautiful printable keepsake — filter by date, style it, and print or save it as a PDF — and everything happens on your device, so the chat is never uploaded anywhere. This guide explains how to export the chat, how to build the book, what the tool does with photos and long chats, and the mistakes that spoil an otherwise perfect keepsake.

Step One: Export the Chat From WhatsApp

Open the chat on your phone, tap the name at the top, choose Export chat, and pick "Without media". WhatsApp hands you a .txt file: every message on its own line, with a timestamp and a sender name, in one of three formats the tool understands — iPhone style ([12/03/2024, 14:22:31] Name: message), Android style (12/03/2024, 14:22 - Name: message), or US 12-hour style (3/12/2024, 2:22 PM - Name: message), in either day/month or month/day order. Choose "Without media" deliberately. A "With media" export bundles every photo and video into a zip, and the .txt file inside it still contains no images — only placeholders — so the with-media route adds a large download without adding anything the book can print. If you want actual photos in the finished book, the honest route is to export without media for the text, then insert the photos manually afterwards; the tool page says this plainly, and pretending otherwise would only disappoint you at the print shop.

Step Two: Build the Book in the Tool

Drop the .txt export onto the tool, or click to browse for it — or press "Load sample chat" first if you want to see the result before trusting it with a real conversation. Then set the book options. Give the book a title. Type your name exactly as it appears in the export into the "My name" field and click "Update preview": your messages jump to the right side in green bubbles, just like the app, while everyone else's stay on the left. Pick a From and To date if you want only part of the chat — a single trip, a single year, the months that matter — instead of the entire history. Choose whether to keep the "<Media omitted>" placeholders that mark where a photo or video sat in the conversation; keeping them preserves the rhythm of the chat, dropping them gives a cleaner read. Then click "Print / Save as PDF" and, in the print dialog, choose "Save as PDF" as the destination (Chrome and Edge) or the PDF button (Safari and Firefox). The page is formatted so that only the chat book prints — no buttons, no tool chrome, no clutter — and the layout is tuned for both US Letter and A4.

How the Book Is Built

The renderer parses the three export formats, groups messages by day under date headers, and lays them out as familiar chat bubbles in a print stylesheet tuned for US Letter and A4. Day headers keep you oriented as the pages turn, timestamps stay attached to every message, and emoji survive intact. Long chats paginate naturally: there is no page limit, and a very long conversation simply becomes a very long book, which is why the date filter matters — it is the difference between a keepsake and a doorstop. The whole render happens in your browser, and the PDF itself is produced by your own print dialog, so the file never touches a server at any point. That privacy property is not a bonus feature; it is the reason the tool can exist at all, because a chat export is one of the most personal files a person owns, and uploading it to a stranger's server to make a PDF would be a strange way to preserve it.

Worked Example: A First Year of Dating, 8,214 Messages

The tool page's own example is a couple who want a keepsake of their first year of dating: 8,214 messages from January to December. They export without media, set the date filter to the full year, type both names so the bubble alignment is right, and save as PDF. The result is a 96-page book — about 85 messages per page — with day headers, timestamps and emoji intact. Printed double-sided at a local print shop, it becomes a birthday gift for under $15. The numbers are worth pausing on, because they set expectations for your own chat: roughly a hundred messages a page means a 2,000-message chat is about 24 pages, a comfortable booklet, while a 20,000-message group thread is well over 200 pages and probably wants a date filter or a greatest-hits edit before it goes near a printer. For a keepsake book, print double-sided on Letter, or send the PDF to a print shop and ask for booklet printing.

Editing Before You Print

You can remove specific messages before printing, and the method is refreshingly low-tech: open the exported .txt file in any text editor, delete the lines you do not want, and drop the edited file into the tool. The parser skips nothing else, so day headers and bubble alignment stay correct. This is how you cut the argument, the wrong-number messages, and the three hundred "ok" replies without breaking the book. Two cautions go with it. First, edit a copy, not your only export — WhatsApp exports are free, but re-exporting a chat you have since deleted messages from gives you a different file. Second, message edits or deletions made inside WhatsApp after you export will not appear in the book; export fresh for the final version, and treat the export as a snapshot of the moment you took it, not a live feed.

Common Mistakes

Exporting "With media" and expecting photos. The .txt file never contains images; with-media only adds placeholders and a huge zip. Export without media, and insert photos manually if you want them. A name that does not match. "My name" must match the export exactly — a nickname in the tool against a full name in the export leaves your messages on the left, in the wrong colour, for the whole book. Printing the entire history of a huge group chat. Filter by date first, or edit the .txt down; a 200-page book is a printing bill, not a gift. Printing from the wrong destination. In the print dialog, choose "Save as PDF" — printing to a physical printer from the preview works too, but the PDF is the version you can proof, share and reprint. Forgetting the book is a snapshot. Export fresh before the final print, or the messages from last week will not be in it. And the privacy mistake in reverse: do not paste a chat export into a random online converter that uploads it. This tool exists so you never have to.

Limits Worth Knowing

The honest limits are four. Without-media exports cannot include the actual photos — you get "<Media omitted>" placeholders, which you can keep or drop, but not the pictures themselves. Very long chats produce very long PDFs, and only the date filter or a manual edit keeps them manageable. Custom fonts and colours are not adjustable; the book uses a clean, readable default designed for print, and if you want a designed cover or coloured section dividers, those are a print-shop job on top of the PDF. And the book is only as current as its export: edits and deletions made after export do not appear. Within those limits, the tool does one job completely: it turns the most ordinary file on your phone — a chat export — into something you can hold, gift and keep. Frequently Asked Questions

Is my chat uploaded anywhere?
No. Your export is rendered into a preview entirely inside your browser, and when you print or save as PDF, that happens on your own device too. The chat file never touches a server.
How do I export a chat from WhatsApp?
Open the chat on your phone, tap the name at the top, choose Export chat, and pick “Without media” to get a .txt file. Drop that file into the tool, or click to browse for it.
Why do my messages show on the left?
Type your name exactly as it appears in the chat export into the “My name” field, then click “Update preview”. Your messages will move to the right side with the green bubble. A nickname that does not match the export exactly will not align.
What happens to photos and videos?
“Without media” exports contain placeholders where photos were. You can keep them in the book as placeholders or untick the box to skip them. To include actual photos, export “With media” and add them manually — the .txt alone never contains images.
Which export formats are supported?
iPhone ([12/03/2024, 14:22:31] Name: message), Android (12/03/2024, 14:22 - Name: message) and US 12-hour (3/12/2024, 2:22 PM - Name: message) exports all work, in either day/month order. Chats in other languages work too, and right-to-left languages (Arabic, Hebrew) render correctly in the preview and in the saved PDF.
