How it works

1

Upload a headshot

Use a recent photo against a plain, light background — no shadows on your face, neutral expression, eyes open. Phone selfies work fine. If yours is an iPhone HEIC file, convert the HEIC photo to JPG first — some browsers and portals cannot open HEIC at all.

2

Pick your country & frame

Choose your document type for the exact official dimensions. Drag and zoom until your head fills the dashed guide oval as required.

3

Print the sheet

Download a 300 DPI 4×6 print sheet with 6–8 copies. Print at 100% scale (no "fit to page") at any kiosk or home printer, then cut.

How to Make a Passport Photo at Home: Sizes, Head Rules and Printing That Passes

US 2×2, UK 35×45 mm and other presets, the 70–80% head rule, the glasses and shadow rejection list, and printing a 300 DPI 4×6 sheet at 100% — no $9 download fee.

The rules that get passport photos rejected

Most rejected passport photos fail on a handful of predictable points. Run through this list before you submit — it is drawn from the standard rules used by the US State Department and most other passport authorities:

  • Glasses off. The US has not accepted glasses in passport photos since 2016 (a signed medical note is the rare exception). Many other countries apply the same rule.
  • No shadows. Shadows across the face or on the wall behind you are the single most common rejection. Stand a step away from the wall and face the light.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed. A natural, slight closed-mouth expression passes; a broad grin with visible teeth often does not.
  • Head size and position. In a US 2×2 inch photo, the head must measure between 1 and 1⅞ inches (25–35 mm) from chin to crown, centred, with both edges of the shoulders visible.
  • Recent and unedited. The photo must be taken within the last 6 months and look like you now. Filters, beauty modes and background-removal edits are not accepted — which is why this tool crops and sizes your real photo rather than altering it.
  • Plain, light background, no other people or objects — including the hands holding a baby.

Two upgrades to the home photo workflow: if the portrait you have is too small or soft for the print sheet, our AI image upscaling guide explains when 2x or 4x helps and where the honest limits are. And before a folder of attempts piles up, the Duplicate Photo Finder picks out the near-identical shots so you keep only the one worth printing.

Frequently asked questions

US passport: 2×2 inches (51×51 mm), head 1–1⅜ in (70–80% of height). UK/Schengen: 35×45 mm. Canada: 50×70 mm. China: 33×48 mm. Everywhere: plain light background, neutral expression, no head coverings (except religious), no glasses for US/UK. The tool sets dimensions automatically; the rest is up to your photo.
Cropping to the right size and laying out a print sheet is pure computation — it costs nothing per photo once built. Paid services charge for the convenience wrapper; here you get the same output free, unlimited and watermark-free. There is no per-photo fee, no watermark, and no account to create — make as many sheets as you like.
Yes, if it's sharp and well-lit. Have someone take it for you from ~1.5 m away for the most natural proportions, stand against a plain white wall, and avoid harsh shadows. Most rejections are about lighting and background, not the camera.
The sheet is exactly 4×6 inches at 300 DPI. Print it at 100% / "actual size" — never "fit to page", which silently rescales. Any drugstore kiosk, print shop or home photo printer works. The downloaded sheet holds 6–8 copies, so one print gives you spares to cut and keep.
No. Cropping and sheet layout run on a canvas in your browser. Your face never leaves your device. The photo you drop in is processed locally from start to finish — framed, resized and laid out on the sheet on your own machine — so nothing about it is uploaded, stored on a server, or shared with anyone.
For a US passport, no — glasses have not been allowed since November 2016, except in rare cases with a signed medical statement. Many other countries follow the same rule. Take the photo without glasses to be safe. Many other countries apply the same rule, so glasses-off is the safest choice wherever you are applying.
US rules require a photo taken within the last 6 months that reflects your current appearance. The same 6-month window is typical for visas and most other countries’ passports. If your appearance has changed significantly — major weight change, new facial features — take a fresh photo rather than reusing an old one, even inside the window.

Worked example: from selfie to a 2×2 print

You need a US passport photo: 2×2 inches, white background, head 1 to 1-3/8 inches tall. Take a selfie against a plain white wall in daylight — no flash shadows, neutral expression, both eyes open. Upload it, and the tool guides your crop to the official head-size ratio, then lays out multiple copies on a standard 4×6 print sheet.

Download the sheet and print it at any drugstore photo kiosk for about 35 cents — versus $15 or more at a passport photo counter. Cut out one 2×2 square and check the requirements list on the page before you submit: no glasses, no uniforms, no heavy shadows. One sheet gives you spares for visas, IDs, and applications for years.

Limitations

The tool sizes and frames your photo correctly, but it cannot fix a bad source: blurry shots, busy backgrounds, shadows across the face, or a tilted head will still get rejected by the passport office. Take the photo in bright, even daylight and keep the camera at eye level.

Requirements also differ by country and document type — a US passport wants 2×2 inches, many visas want 35×45 mm, and some IDs have their own rules. Always confirm the exact size against the official requirements for your specific application; the tool offers the common presets, but the issuing authority has the final word.
