How to Use the Area Converter

Enter the land size, choose the unit it is measured in, and choose the unit you want to see. Press Convert and the tool shows the answer plus the intermediate value in square feet, so you can follow the calculation. All six units — square feet, square yards, square meters, acres, hectares and square miles — convert in both directions.

Typical uses: a listing says "5 acres" and you want the size in square feet before comparing it with a 217,000 sq ft parcel; a European property brochure quotes hectares and you think in acres; or a deed mentions a "section" and you need it in square miles. Because every unit routes through square feet, converting back always returns your starting figure.

How Area Conversion Works

Each unit is defined by how many square feet it contains. The converter multiplies your input by the square-feet factor for the source unit, then divides by the factor for the target unit.

Result = Value × (sq ft per From unit) ÷ (sq ft per To unit)

The factors: 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft, 1 sq m = 10.7639 sq ft, 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft exactly, 1 hectare = 107,639.1 sq ft (10,000 sq m), and 1 sq mi = 27,878,400 sq ft (640 acres). So 5 acres = 5 × 43,560 ÷ 1 = 217,800 sq ft, and 1 sq mi = 27,878,400 ÷ 43,560 = 640 acres exactly.

Worked Example

A listing offers a 5-acre lot. How big is that in square feet, square yards and hectares?

StepCalculationResult
1. Acres to sq ft5 × 43,560217,800 sq ft
2. Sq ft to sq yd217,800 ÷ 924,200 sq yd
3. Sq ft to hectares217,800 ÷ 107,639.12.0234 ha
4. Sq ft to sq m217,800 ÷ 10.763920,234.3 sq m

These are the numbers worth memorising: 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 4,840 sq yd ≈ 0.4047 hectares. And going the other way, a hectare is about 2.471 acres — roughly two and a half times an acre.

US Land Units Explained — Acre, Hectare, Section

Most converters give you the number and stop. Here is the context behind the units you will actually meet on American listings and deeds:

1 acre4,840 sq yd / 0.4047 ha43,560
1 hectare2.471 acres / 10,000 sq m107,639.1

1 township36 sections / 36 sq mi1,003,622,400
1 sq yard9 sq ft9
1 sq meter10.7639 sq ft10.7639

The acre dates to medieval England — originally the area a yoke of oxen could plow in a day — and survives because it is written into millions of US deeds and zoning codes. The section (one square mile, 640 acres) is the grid unit of the Public Land Survey System that divided most of the American Midwest and West; thirty-six sections make a township. You will see "Section 12, Township 4N" language on rural deeds. The hectare is the metric world's answer to the acre and the unit you will meet in Canadian, European and scientific contexts. A handy anchor: an American football field including end zones is about 1.32 acres — so a 5-acre lot is roughly four football fields.

Limitations

The converter assumes exact standard definitions — 1 acre is exactly 43,560 sq ft everywhere in the US, so there is no regional variation to worry about. But it converts area only: it cannot tell you the length and width of a lot (a 217,800 sq ft parcel could be 330×660 ft or 200×1,089 ft), and it does not account for irregular lot shapes, setbacks, easements, or the difference between gross and net (buildable) area that developers quote. Treat the output as a unit conversion, not a property valuation.

Guides for This Tool

Area figures end up on flyers, and flyers end up with QR codes. Before printing either, run the code through the QR Safety Scan to see where it really points — and if you are measuring on site, dictate the numbers into the Voice Recorder and convert them back at a desk.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in 1 acre?
One acre equals exactly 43,560 square feet. The figure comes from the old definition of an acre as a chain (66 feet) by a furlong (660 feet): 66 × 660 = 43,560. It is exact, not approximate. Surveyors still use the same figure today, which is why parcel sizes in deeds divide so cleanly into acres.
How many acres are in 1 square mile?
One square mile contains exactly 640 acres. In US land surveying this is called a 'section'. A 5-acre lot is therefore 5 ÷ 640 = 0.0078125 square miles. Sections are the grid behind most rural land descriptions in the Midwest and West, so deeds often describe a parcel as a fraction of a section.
How many square feet are in 1 hectare?
One hectare equals 107,639 square feet (10,000 square meters × 10.7639). A hectare is about 2.471 acres, so it is roughly two and a half times the size of an acre. That is just under two American football fields including the end zones — a handy picture when a listing mixes metric and imperial sizes.
What is a section of land?
A section is one square mile of land — 640 acres — the basic grid unit of the US Public Land Survey System. Thirty-six sections make a township. You will see 'section' on deeds and plat maps across the Midwest and West.
How many square yards are in 1 acre?
One acre equals 4,840 square yards (43,560 ÷ 9). This is the figure used in older deeds and in UK property listings, where land is still commonly quoted in square yards. Gardeners also meet it when buying turf or topsoil by the yard, since suppliers price ground cover in square yards.
Why does the US still use acres instead of hectares?
The acre is baked into centuries of deeds, zoning laws and the Public Land Survey System, so switching would mean rewriting millions of legal documents. The metric hectare is standard in science and most of the world, which is why this converter handles both.
