How to Use the Weight Converter

Enter your value, pick the unit you are converting from, and pick the unit you want. Press Convert and you get the answer plus a two-step breakdown showing the value in kilograms in the middle, so you can follow the arithmetic yourself. Metric units (kilogram, gram, ton), imperial units (pound, ounce) and the British stone are all supported, in both directions.

Common uses: converting your body weight between kg and pounds for a gym plan, translating a UK bathroom scale that reads in stone into kilograms, checking a luggage allowance (airlines quote it in kg, but some US travel sites quote pounds), or converting a recipe that lists ounces or pounds. Because every conversion routes through kilograms, converting back always returns the original number.

How Weight Conversion Works

Each unit is defined by how many kilograms it equals. The converter multiplies your input by the "kilograms per unit" factor for the source unit, then divides by the factor for the target unit.

Result = Value × (kg per From unit) ÷ (kg per To unit)

The factors: 1 gram = 0.001 kg, 1 ton = 1,000 kg, 1 pound = 0.453592 kg (exact by definition), 1 ounce = 0.0283495 kg, and 1 stone = 6.35029 kg (exactly 14 lb). So converting 10 kg to pounds is 10 × 1 ÷ 0.453592 = 22.0462 lb, and converting 12 stone to kilograms is 12 × 6.35029 ÷ 1 = 76.2035 kg.

Worked Example

A UK fitness app says a user weighs 12 stone and wants the weight in kilograms and pounds:

StepCalculationResult
1. Stone to pounds12 × 14168 lb
2. Pounds to kg168 × 0.45359276.20 kg
3. Shortcut check12 × 6.3502976.2035 kg ✓
4. Back to stone76.2035 ÷ 6.3502912 stone ✓

The numbers line up neatly: a stone is exactly 14 pounds, so stone-to-pound conversion is always a clean multiply or divide. That exactness is no coincidence — the stone was standardized at 14 lb precisely so that everyday body weights land on round numbers.

The Stone and UK Imperial Units — What Most Converters Skip

International converters often pretend the stone doesn't exist. In the UK and Ireland it is still the unit everyone quotes for body weight — "I weigh 11 stone" — and US visitors are routinely confused by it. Here is the imperial hierarchy in its modern form:

Imperial unitMetric valueIn pounds
1 ounce (oz)28.3495 g0.0625 lb
1 pound (lb)0.453592 kg1 lb
1 stone (st)6.35029 kg14 lb
1 US (short) ton907.2 kg2,000 lb
1 metric ton1,000 kg2,204.62 lb

Two caveats. First, the stone is a people unit: nobody weighs flour or luggage in stone, and Americans don't use it at all — the US talks body weight in plain pounds ("I weigh 180"). Second, the ounce used here is the everyday avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g); precious metals use the heavier troy ounce (31.10 g), which is not included. The stone itself is exact at 14 lb, which is why the calculator includes it as a first-class unit.

Limitations

The converter deals in mass, not volume — converting "1 kg of flour" to cups is not possible without knowing density, which varies by ingredient. The ounce used here is the everyday avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g); precious metals use the heavier troy ounce (31.10 g), which is not included. The metric ton is used, not the American short ton (907 kg) or British long ton (1,016 kg). Results are shown to 4 decimal places; for body weight, one decimal is plenty — no bathroom scale is accurate to a ten-thousandth of a kilogram.

Converted weights usually end up written somewhere — a label, a listing, a label spec. The how to convert text case guide keeps those headings consistent, and for the photo that goes with the parcel, the Face Blur tool covers faces and plates before the picture is shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pounds are in 1 kg?
One kilogram equals 2.2046 pounds. To convert kg to lbs, multiply the kilogram value by 2.2046. For example, 50 kg × 2.2046 = 110.23 pounds. To go the other way, divide pounds by the same factor — or just swap the units in this converter and let it do the arithmetic.
How many kg is 1 pound?
One pound equals 0.453592 kg, usually rounded to 0.454 kg. To convert pounds to kg, multiply the pound value by 0.453592. For example, 100 lb × 0.453592 = 45.36 kg. The long decimal is the exact legal definition of the pound, which is why results stay consistent between converters.
How many pounds are in 1 stone?
One stone equals exactly 14 pounds. The stone is still the standard unit for body weight in the UK and Ireland — someone who weighs 12 stone weighs 168 pounds. It survives because the numbers stay human-sized: most adults fall between 8 and 20 stone, an easy range to picture.
How many kg is 1 stone?
One stone equals 6.35029 kg (14 × 0.453592). So 12 stone is 76.20 kg and 10 stone is 63.50 kg. Our converter handles stone to kg and back automatically. That matters at the doctor's office or the gym, where a British weight in stone often needs a metric figure for the chart.
How many grams are in 1 ounce?
One avoirdupois ounce — the ounce used for everyday weighing — equals 28.3495 grams. Gold and jewelry use the troy ounce instead, which is heavier at 31.1035 grams. Recipes are the common trap: a cookbook ounce is always the everyday one, while a precious-metal price quoted per ounce always means troy.
What is the difference between a metric ton and a US ton?
A metric ton is exactly 1,000 kg. A US (short) ton is 2,000 pounds, about 907.2 kg. A British (long) ton is 2,240 pounds, about 1,016 kg. This converter uses the metric ton. The three-way split is why freight and shipping quotes always name which ton they mean.
How do I convert grams to ounces?
Divide the gram value by 28.3495 to get ounces. For example, 500 g ÷ 28.3495 = 17.64 ounces. Our converter handles this and every other unit pair automatically. For cooking, remember that a rough divide-by-28 is fine for seasoning, but baking rewards the exact figure this page gives.
