The AI model loads once, then every removal is instant and unlimited.

How it works

1

Drop in your photo

Product shots, portraits, pet photos — anything with a clear subject. Your photo stays on your device from start to finish.

2

AI cuts out the subject

A neural network (the same class of model paid services use) runs right in your browser via WebAssembly and separates subject from background in seconds.

3

Download the PNG

Transparent background, full resolution, no watermark. Use it for listings, thumbnails, presentations — unlimited times.

How the AI separates subject from background

The tool runs a portrait and product segmentation network of the MODNet/RMBG family (MIT-licensed), compiled to WebAssembly. In a single forward pass it predicts a per-pixel alpha mask — how much of each pixel belongs to the subject — then refines the edges for hair and fur. The model file (about 45 MB) downloads once and is cached by your browser, so repeat removals start instantly with zero per-image cost.

Tips for clean cut-outs

1. Contrast is king: a dark product on a dark background is the hardest case for every remover. 2. Keep hair loose and visible, and avoid motion blur — the mask can only be as sharp as the photo. 3. Shoot at the highest resolution you have; the mask is computed at full size. 4. For glass, veils or transparent objects, expect to touch up edges manually — transparency defeats every automatic remover, paid or free.

Worked example

An Etsy seller photographs 50 products on a white backdrop. Manual cut-out in Photoshop: about 6 minutes each, or 5 hours for the batch. With this tool: roughly 3 seconds of compute per image, about 30 seconds of hands-on time total including downloads. A comparable paid API (remove.bg) charges $9/month for 40 images — 50 images would need the $29 tier. Savings per batch: $29 and five hours.

Limitations

Wispy hair, fur edges, glass, veils and semi-transparent objects can show halos or rough edges — the hardest cases for every background remover. Busy backgrounds in the subject’s own colors confuse the mask. The model expects photos, not illustrations or screenshots. Very large images (over ~12 MP) are downscaled for speed on low-end devices.

The workflow often runs the other way, too: create the image first with the AI Image Generator, then cut it out here when you need a transparent background.

A clean cut-out is usually headed somewhere specific. If the destination is an ID or application photo, follow the passport photo guide for the sizes and head rules that keep it valid; if it is a whole shoot being delivered, the Video Inventory approach — one audited spreadsheet of every file — is worth copying for stills.

Frequently asked questions

Why is remove.bg not free like this?
They run the AI on expensive servers, so each image costs them money — that's what the $9/month Lite plan (40 images) pays for. This tool shifts the compute to your device: the model downloads once (~45 MB, cached), then every removal is free because it costs nobody anything.
Is the quality as good as paid tools?
For people, products and pets on normal backgrounds — yes, essentially the same class of result. The hardest cases (wispy hair, glass, veils) challenge every background remover, paid or free. Good lighting and a clear edge between subject and background matter more than the tool you choose, free or paid.
Does it work offline?
After the first model download, yes — inference is fully local. Your photos never touch a network at any point. The model is cached by your browser, so repeat visits work offline too; only the very first visit needs a connection, to fetch the page and the model file itself.
What about privacy?
This is the big win over upload-based removers: product photos, ID documents and personal pictures are processed entirely on your device. Nothing is sent, stored or logged anywhere. There is no account and no history, so closing the tab leaves no trace of the images you worked on.
Can I use the cut-outs commercially?
The tool places no restrictions or watermarks on output — but you must own or license the input photo. Product sellers: this is ideal for clean marketplace listings. The same rule applies to any image you did not take yourself: check the license or get permission before using a cut-out commercially.
What image formats can I upload?
JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC (converted automatically). The output is always a PNG with a transparent background, at your photo's full resolution. PNG is used because it preserves the transparent edges losslessly; if you need a smaller file, convert the PNG afterward without losing the cut-out itself.
Can I replace the background instead of removing it?
Not in this tool — download the transparent PNG and drop it onto any background in your editor, or pair it with the AI Image Upscaler and Thumbnail Maker for finished designs. Keeping removal and replacement separate means the cut-out stays reusable across every background you ever need.
Why did it cut off part of my subject?
Low contrast between subject and background is the usual cause — the model could not tell where one ends. Re-shoot with separation (a lighter backdrop, more light on the subject) for a cleaner mask. Busy patterns directly behind hair or fur are the other common culprit; a plainer backdrop fixes most cases.
