Configure a prefix like BATES- and every page gets its own number.

How it works

1

Load your document

Drop in a single PDF — a contract, an exhibit set, a bundle of scans. It opens locally in your browser; confidential discovery files never touch a server.

2

Set your numbering scheme

Choose a prefix (BATES-, EXH-, DEF-…), a start number and zero padding, then pick where the stamp lands: four corners or centered. A live preview shows the first and last numbers.

3

Download the stamped set

Every page gets drawn-on sequential numbering, and you get a fresh PDF back. Stamp again with different settings any time — the original stays untouched.

What Bates numbering is (and isn't)

Bates numbering comes from the pre-digital legal world: a hand-fed stamping machine imprinted a unique sequential number on each page of a document production. The point was never typography — it was reference. When counsel says "see BATES-004213," everyone opens the same page, regardless of how the set was copied, scanned or re-exported. Courts and firms still rely on that property today: a Bates number is a stable, unique page identifier that survives reformatting.

What most people get wrong is treating the number as a stamp of authenticity. A Bates number proves nothing about who produced a page or when — that comes from the accompanying certificate of production and the firm's records. This tool does exactly one job honestly: it draws the sequential numbers your scheme defines, in the position you choose, on every page, without a $240/year Acrobat subscription standing in the way.

Best practices, from how paralegals actually use this: keep one unnumbered master copy of every set and stamp only working copies, because stamped numbers can't be cleanly removed. Agree the prefix and digit count before you start a production — "EXH-001" and "EXH-0001" sorting differently will haunt you. And place the number consistently; bottom-right is the convention because it rarely collides with signatures or letterhead, but the only real rule is that it doesn't obscure text and stays identical across the whole production.

Before a document set goes out, its links deserve the same check as its stamps: the PDF Link Extractor extracts every hyperlink from a PDF, so nothing points somewhere it shouldn't.

Frequently asked questions

Bates numbering is a sequential numbering system (e.g. BATES-000001, BATES-000002) stamped on every page of a legal document. It gives each page a unique, unchanging identifier so lawyers, paralegals and courts can reference exact pages during discovery, filing and trial preparation.
No — and it's important to be clear. This tool stamps sequential numbers onto your pages exactly as you configure them, but it does not provide any legal certification, audit trail or chain-of-custody documentation. For formal discovery production, confirm with your firm what standards apply.
Acrobat Pro charges about $240/year and its Bates Numbering lives inside a heavy desktop app. This tool does the core job — prefix, start number, zero-padding and position — for free, in your browser, with no account and no file uploads.
The stamp is drawn onto the page content, so it becomes part of the PDF like any printed text. To change numbers, keep your original file and re-run the tool with new settings — never overwrite your only copy of an unnumbered original.
The safest default is the bottom-right corner, clear of page content. This tool also offers bottom-left, top-left, top-right and centered — pick a spot that doesn't cover signatures, dates or exhibits, and stay consistent across the whole set.
