Watch a 20 MB scan melt down to 2 MB — with before/after sizes shown honestly.

How it works

1

Drop in a bloated PDF

Phone scans, camera photos of documents and image-heavy reports are the classic culprits — a 10-page scan can easily be 30 MB. It opens locally; nothing uploads.

2

Pick a strength

Balanced suits email attachments and form uploads. High keeps print quality; Maximum squeezes hardest for strict portal limits. You see exact before/after sizes.

3

Download the slim PDF

Pages are re-rendered as efficiently encoded images and rebuilt into a fresh PDF. Unlimited files, no watermarks, no accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Real compression of scanned PDFs means re-encoding the page images at lower resolution — and an image of text isn't selectable text. That's the honest trade every compressor makes (server ones just don't tell you). If your PDF is mostly born-digital text, compression gains will be small anyway.
iLovePDF free uploads your file, shows ads, queues you at peak hours and caps sizes — serious compression is a $6.61/month Premium feature. Here it's unlimited and private: compress fifty scans in a row if you want.
Already-optimized PDFs (exported from Word, vector graphics, already-compressed images) have little fat to trim. This tool shines on scans and phone photos of documents — that's also the #1 real-world reason people compress PDFs.
Yes — rendering and rebuilding happen with pdf.js and pdf-lib inside your browser. Sensitive documents never touch a network.
On the High preset (150 DPI), prints look crisp for documents. Balanced is fine for reading and forms. Maximum is for beating upload limits — readable on screen, not for printing.

Worked example: shrinking a scanned contract

A 10-page scanned contract lands in your inbox at 24 MB — too big for your email provider’s 20 MB attachment limit. You drop it into the compressor: the tool re-renders each page image at a sensible resolution and re-encodes with efficient compression. Thirty seconds later the file is 3.1 MB, the text is still perfectly readable on screen, and it attaches to your email without complaint.

For print-critical documents choose the lighter compression preset: the file lands around 8 MB instead of 3 MB, but fine print and signatures stay razor sharp on paper. Either way the original stays untouched on your device — download the compressed copy, compare side by side, and only send what looks good to you.

Limitations

Compression trades pixels for bytes, and there is no free lunch: heavy compression on scanned pages softens fine detail. If the PDF is headed to a print shop or a court filing with strict quality rules, use the lightest setting and verify the output at 100% zoom before sending.

Already-optimized PDFs barely shrink — a digitally-generated 200 KB invoice will not become 50 KB no matter the setting, because there is no image fat to trim. And password-protected PDFs cannot be processed in the browser at all; remove the password in your PDF reader first, then compress.
