Fake File Detector

Is that "invoice.pdf" really a PDF — or invoice.pdf.exe in disguise? Read the file's true type from its magic bytes.

100% private — only reads signature bytes, never runs the file

Inspect a suspicious file

Honest limit: this tool identifies a file's type from its magic bytes — it is not a virus or malware scanner and cannot tell you if a file is malicious.
Drop any file here or click to browse Only the first bytes are read, on your device. The file is never opened, run, or uploaded.

Got an attachment named something like "invoice.pdf.exe"? Find out what it really is before you double-click it.

How it works

1

Drop the file

Add any file you're unsure about — an email attachment, a download, a USB stick file. Only its first 64 KB are read, in your browser; nothing is executed or uploaded.

2

Read its magic bytes

Every format has an invisible signature: JPEGs start with FF D8 FF, PDFs with %PDF, Windows programs with MZ. The file name can lie; these bytes can't.

3

Get the verdict

See the real type, the full extension chain (invoice → pdf → exe), and clear flags for double extensions and name-vs-content mismatches.

Why file names can't be trusted

The oldest trick in malware history is also the simplest: rename a program to look like a document. A file called invoice.pdf.exe is a Windows executable — but because Windows hides known extensions by default, many people see only "invoice.pdf" and double-click it expecting a PDF viewer. That one click runs a program instead, and this exact disguise has delivered malware through email attachments for decades.

The defense is to ignore the name and read the file's magic bytes — the signature stamped into the first bytes of every real format. A genuine PDF begins with the text %PDF; a genuine JPEG begins with the bytes FF D8 FF; a Windows program begins with the letters MZ. These signatures are what your operating system actually uses to decide how to handle a file, so comparing them against the claimed extension exposes the disguise instantly.

Keep the honest limit in mind: magic bytes reveal the type, not the intent. A real PDF can still carry a malicious payload, and this tool will happily call it a PDF. Use it to unmask disguises — then let your antivirus decide about malice.

Frequently asked questions

How can you tell what a file really is?
Almost every file format starts with invisible signature bytes — magic bytes. A JPEG always starts with FF D8 FF, a PNG with 89 50 4E 47, a Windows program with MZ, a PDF with %PDF. This tool reads those first bytes, which the file name cannot fake, and reports the true format.
What is a double-extension attack?
It is a classic disguise: a file named invoice.pdf.exe. Windows hides known extensions by default, so the victim sees "invoice.pdf" and believes it is a document — but .exe is the real extension and the file is a program. This tool lists every extension in the chain and flags executable ones.
Why is invoice.pdf.exe dangerous?
Because the real type is a Windows executable wearing a document's name. Double-clicking it runs a program, not a PDF viewer — which is exactly how malware spread through email attachments for decades. Any mismatch between the name and the magic bytes deserves extreme caution.
Does this tool scan for viruses or malware?
No — and this is important. Fake File Detector identifies the file TYPE from its magic bytes; it cannot tell you whether a file is malicious. A clean-looking PDF and an infected one have identical magic bytes. Never treat this as a virus or malware scanner — use a real antivirus for that.
Is the file uploaded anywhere?
No. Only the first 64 KB of the file are read, entirely in your browser, to check its signature bytes. Nothing is uploaded, executed, or stored — the tool only reads, never runs, the file.
