EST to PST Time Converter

Use this free EST to PST time converter to translate any time between Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, GMT and Central European zones. Pick a date and it automatically applies daylight saving rules, then shows you the overlap of normal business hours so scheduling is painless.

Convert Time Between Zones

How to Use the EST to PST Time Converter

Conversion takes four steps. First, type the time into the time box — for example, 3:00 PM. Second, pick the date: it decides whether daylight saving time applies in each zone, which can shift your result by a full hour.

Third, choose the from and to zones — six options covering the four mainland US zones plus GMT/UTC and Central European Time. Fourth, press Convert Time. You get the converted time with the correct abbreviation (EST vs EDT, PST vs PDT), the target weekday and date with a "next day"/"previous day" note when midnight is crossed, and a daylight saving summary for both zones.

Below that, the business-hours overlap shows when 9-to-5 hours coincide — for ET to PT, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM ET (= 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM PT). If there is no overlap, it says so and suggests an early or late call.

How the Conversion Works

Every time zone is an offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC): Eastern UTC−5, Central UTC−6, Mountain UTC−7, Pacific UTC−8, GMT UTC+0, Central European UTC+1. The converter subtracts the "from" zone's offset to get a UTC timestamp, then adds the "to" zone's offset. Routing through UTC avoids sign errors.

UTC time = local time − zone offset  →  target time = UTC time + target offset

Daylight saving complicates the offsets, so the converter checks your date against the real rules. US zones spring forward on the second Sunday of March and fall back on the first Sunday of November — Eastern becomes UTC−4, Pacific UTC−7. Central Europe follows EU rules: forward on the last Sunday of March, back on the last Sunday of October (CET becomes CEST, UTC+2). Because the switch weekends differ, the New York–Berlin gap is 5 hours for a few weeks each spring and fall instead of 6.

Worked Example

Let us convert 3:00 PM Eastern on July 15, 2026 to Pacific Time, walking through exactly what the converter does:

StepCalculationResult
1. Check daylight saving (July date)US DST runs Mar 8 – Nov 1, 2026Eastern = EDT (UTC−4), Pacific = PDT (UTC−7)
2. Convert to UTC3:00 PM − (−4 hours)7:00 PM UTC
3. Convert UTC to Pacific7:00 PM UTC + (−7 hours)12:00 PM PDT
4. Business-hours overlapET 9–5 = 1–9 PM UTC; PT 9–5 = 4 PM–12 AM UTC12:00 PM – 5:00 PM ET (= 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM PT)

The 3-hour ET–PT gap never changes — both zones shift on the same weekends, so noon in New York is always 9 AM in Los Angeles. The transatlantic gap does move: in late March 2026, after Europe springs forward but before the US does, New York is only 4 hours behind London. That is the trap the date picker catches.

Why the US Still Has Daylight Saving Time — and the Sunshine Protection Debate

Most converters give you the number and stop. But why the number shifts twice a year is a live political fight. Daylight saving was standardized by the Uniform Time Act of 1966 and stretched to March–November in 2005 on the argument that evening daylight cuts energy use. The savings proved modest, while researchers documented spikes in heart attacks and accidents after the spring-forward shift.

That tension produced the Sunshine Protection Act, a bill to make daylight saving permanent. It passed the US Senate in March 2022, stalled in the House, and has been reintroduced since. The twist: sleep scientists favor permanent standard time — morning light matters more for circadian health than evening light — while retailers lobby for permanent daylight time because evening light means evening spending. Until Congress decides, the clock changes stay.

For transatlantic scheduling, the practical fallout is the table below: the windows where normal working hours genuinely overlap.

Limitations

This converter covers the six zones Americans convert most often — not the full time zone database. Places like Arizona (which skips daylight saving and stays on MST year-round), Hawaii, Alaska and Australia are not included, so double-check meetings involving Phoenix in July. The daylight saving check is date-based and approximate: on the actual switchover Sundays the change happens at 2:00 AM local time, so verify any time scheduled within an hour of the switch.

London is modeled here as fixed GMT/UTC, but the UK actually observes British Summer Time (UTC+1) from late March to late October — summer conversions labeled "GMT" will be one hour behind real London time. The overlap note also assumes a standard 9 AM–5 PM workday, and historical dates before the 2007 US rule change may be slightly off, since the current March/November rule is applied to all years.

Scheduling across zones usually ends in a recording somebody has to fix. Two companions: the AI Audio Noise Remover cleans the call recording afterwards, and the guide to converting text case keeps the shared notes and titles consistent before they are circulated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the time difference between EST and PST?
Always 3 hours: EST is UTC-5 and PST is UTC-8. During daylight saving, EDT (UTC-4) versus PDT (UTC-7) is still exactly 3 hours — noon in New York is 9 AM in Los Angeles year-round. Both coasts change clocks on the same dates, so the gap between them never widens or narrows.
Does this converter handle daylight saving time?
Yes. Pick a date and it applies the US rule (second Sunday of March to first Sunday of November) and the EU rule (last Sunday of March to last Sunday of October). It is approximate on switchover days — verify times near 2 AM then.
What are the best meeting hours between New York and London?
The 9-to-5 overlap is 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM Eastern, which is 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in London. A 10:00 AM Eastern / 3:00 PM London call suits both sides. Outside daylight-saving mismatch weeks the gap is 5 hours; for three or four weeks a year it drops to 4, so recheck recurring meetings then.
Why do the US and Europe change clocks on different dates?
The US switches on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November; the EU on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October. For 3 to 4 weeks each spring and fall, the US-Europe gap runs one hour smaller than usual.
What is the Sunshine Protection Act?
A US bill to make daylight saving time permanent, ending the twice-yearly change. It passed the Senate in 2022 but stalled in the House and has been reintroduced since. Sleep scientists tend to favor permanent standard time instead. Until anything passes, the clocks keep changing on the current March and November schedule.
How do I schedule a meeting between the US West Coast and Europe?
There is almost no 9-to-5 overlap: 9 AM in Los Angeles is already 5 or 6 PM in London and Berlin. Aim for 8:00 to 10:00 AM Pacific, which is 4:00 to 6:00 PM in London. If that is too early, one side has to bend — usually Europe taking an early-evening call.
