Freezer inventory

Storage times follow USDA FoodKeeper best-quality guidelines. Kept at 0°F, frozen food stays safe indefinitely — these dates protect taste and texture, not safety.

How it works

1

Log items as they go in

Enter what you froze, pick the food category, set the quantity and the date. Each category carries its USDA best-quality storage time.

2

Get flagged before quality fades

Items within two months of their quality limit get a "use soon" flag; anything past it is marked "past best quality." The list always sorts by urgency.

3

Print the door list

Stick the printed inventory on the freezer door with checkboxes, so the whole household knows what's inside without opening it.

An inventory habit protects the kitchen; a verification habit protects the computer. Recipe files, firmware updates and "official" documents all deserve one check: the Fake File Detector reads what a file really is under its name, in your browser, before it gets opened.

Frequently asked questions

Does frozen food ever go bad?
Food kept continuously at 0°F (-18°C) stays safe indefinitely — freezing stops bacterial growth. What declines is quality: texture, flavor and color suffer over time, and freezer burn dries food out. The USDA storage times in this tracker are best-quality guidelines, not safety deadlines.
Where do the storage times come from?
The times are based on the USDA FoodKeeper guidelines: for example, whole poultry 9–12 months, ground meat 3–4 months, lean fish 6–8 months, blanched vegetables 10–12 months, and soups 2–3 months. Each category in the tracker carries its USDA range.
What does the “use soon” flag mean?
An item is flagged "use soon" when it is within 2 months of the end of its USDA best-quality window, and "past best quality" once it passes it. Plan meals around flagged items first so nothing quietly degrades in the back of the freezer.
Can I refreeze food that has thawed?
If raw meat thawed in the refrigerator, the USDA says it can be refrozen without cooking, though quality suffers. Never refreeze food left at room temperature for more than 2 hours, and never refreeze food thawed in the microwave or cold water unless you cook it first.
Is my inventory data private?
Yes. Your entire inventory is stored only in this browser's local storage on your device. Nothing is uploaded anywhere and no account is required. Use Export JSON for a backup. Exporting matters because clearing browser data wipes local storage — keep a recent JSON file somewhere safe and you can restore the whole list in seconds.

Stop losing food to the back of the freezer

The average household throws away a shocking amount of food every year, and the freezer — bought to prevent exactly that — is often where food goes to be forgotten. A bag of chicken thighs buried under pizza boxes for fourteen months is not a backup plan; it is future trash with freezer burn. The fix is embarrassingly simple: write down what goes in and when, and let something else remember the dates. Paid meal-planning apps bundle this into subscriptions, and the free options are stale phone apps or spreadsheet templates you have to maintain by hand. This tracker is the free, no-signup version that actually reminds you.

Every item you add gets a use-by date computed from USDA FoodKeeper guidelines — the same ranges dietitians and food-safety educators use. Whole poultry keeps 9 to 12 months, ground meat just 3 to 4, lean fish 6 to 8, blanched vegetables 10 to 12, and soups or stews 2 to 3. Two important nuances: these are quality windows, not safety deadlines — food held at 0°F stays safe indefinitely — and the clock assumes proper packaging. Air is the enemy. Squeeze it out of bags, wrap tightly in freezer paper or foil before bagging, and vacuum-seal when you can; poorly wrapped food hits its quality limit far earlier than the table says.

The urgency sorting is the whole point. Most people organize freezers by category — meat here, vegetables there — and then never rotate. This list re-sorts itself so the oldest, most at-risk items sit at the top, turning "what should I cook this week?" into a glance instead of an archaeological dig. When you print the door inventory and tape it to the freezer, everyone in the household shops from the freezer first instead of opening the door, staring, and closing it — which also keeps the temperature stable.

A few habits multiply the value. Freeze in meal-sized portions so you never thaw more than you need. Label everything with the contents and date before it goes in — frozen mystery bags are how food gets wasted. Cool cooked food quickly before freezing, and freeze flat in bags for faster freezing and easier stacking. When you take something out, delete it here (or tap the minus to reduce the quantity) so the list stays honest; a tracker you do not update is just decoration.

  • Blanch vegetables before freezing — it stops enzyme action that degrades color and flavor.
  • Leave headspace in rigid containers; liquids expand as they freeze.
  • First in, first out: cook the flagged "use soon" items before buying more of the same.
